WHY IS IT WORTH VISITING ORADEA? February 24, 2021
Why is it worth visiting Oradea?
Is it worth visiting Oradea, at least on a weekend? Is there anything special to do, see and enjoy in this city, which until recently was unjustly perceived as a transit destination? We say yes, it is worth visiting Oradea and we think you will agree with us when you return.
The elegant and quiet Oradea waits for you full of colour and flavour, with picturesque pedestrian boulevards and spacious parks where odds are you will NOT get lost in the crowd.
Oradea stands out not only with its special architectural style, but also with unique tourist sites and attractions. Here are some of the reasons why it is worth visiting Oradea as soon as possible.
Impressions from Oradea
I found Oradea with the same relaxed atmosphere, of a quiet and welcoming city. But the quiet Oradea is full of energy when needed; it always has a charming tricksy air. No wonder, it's a university centre as well! You can stroll along the boulevards lined with elegant buildings and the pedestrian alleys full of terraces and restaurants. You can get lost on the shady paths of larger and smaller parks. You can sit quietly on a bench on the banks of the Crișul Repede river, listening to the murmur of the water and the cry of seagulls scanning the buildings in cheerful colours. Oradea boasted, a few years ago, that it is the greenest city in Romania; it seems that it has not lost this status.
The Art Nouveau city of Romania has a unique, enchanting architecture, but also an old history and its palpable traces. At least for these reasons it is worth visiting Oradea, the only Art Nouveau city in the country.
Don't miss it in Oradea!
-Medieval fortress. Originally called Varad, the fortress defended by five bastions hides between its walls two palaces (Gothic and Renaissance) and a Roman Catholic Church. The fortress was built during the reign of the Hungarian king Ladislaus I (1077-1095). Recently renovated, the Medieval Fortress of Oradea hosts all the important events in the city. You step not only on the cobblestones but also on crumbs of history.
-Piața Unirii, a landmark of the city one should not by-pass, especially since it is flanked by the beautiful Art-Nouveau style buildings that made Oradea famous. The Black Eagle Palace, the Moon Church and the City Hall Tower single out. In the Moon Church there is a unique mechanism in Europe that patterns upon the rotational motion of the Moon around the Earth.
-Oradea City Hall. The City Hall is a tall building in a nonchalant eclectic architectural style. One of its main attractions is the Clock Tower where, on the first level, there is the clock that announces the exact time to the rhythms of "Iancu's March". Climb the tower and you will be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view over the city!
Where the heart of the city beats
- Union Square. The energy and atmosphere of the square dominated by the statue of Michael the Brave give the Union Square the undisputed status of historical and cultural downtown of Oradea.
-Not far, right on the river bank there is the third largest synagogue in Europe, the Zion Synagogue. It was built by the Neolog Jewish community and delights you with its Moorish oriental influences.
Calea Republicii. Impressive buildings, truly spectacular, welcome you on Calea Republicii. The Poynar House, the Queen Maria Theatre, the Ursuline Church and the Rimanoczy and Kolozsvari Palaces will surely not go unnoticeable. The most famous is the Moskovits Miksa Palace, built at the beginning of the last century in an elegant secession style. On Calea Republicii there are plenty of terraces, restaurants, pastry shops and stores that it will be difficult for you to choose one.
Impressive palaces
-The Baroque complex and the Roman Catholic Cathedral. The ensemble built in the 18th century is impressive in size and architecture. The Roman Catholic Basilica is the largest and one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in the country. The Baroque Palace, the former Palace of the Roman Catholic Episcopate (1762-1777) has 100 rooms and 365 windows, one for each day of the year. Across the road there is the Canonical Row, an architectural complex consisting of 10 rows of buildings. Among the lights and shadows you can imagine that once upon a time monks would walk in line and pray incessantly.
-Dealul Ciuperca. You have Oradea and a large part of the surroundings at your feet. You will probably be amazed by the beauty of the sunset which covers Oradea in the warmest shades of gold and silver.
Test the energy of the thermal waters at Băile Felix
The surroundings of Oradea are in competition with the borough. Suffice to say Băile Felix and I already imagine you dreaming of the Spa in the thermal water pools or in the water parks - if you are more energetic. Băile Felix resort is famous for its mild climate and thermal mineral waters with healing properties that soothe your mind, body and soul. It is worth coming here in any season; the temperature of the thermal water exceeds 40 degrees Celsius even in winter. Is your wish to be as close as possible to the healing pools in Felix? Book a KUB holiday home! Intimate, chic and equipped with all modern facilities, the Kokopelli house also has a terrace from where you can gaze at the stars with your significant other. Do not miss the Thermal Lake with Water Lilies and Lotuses, unique in the world. The delicate beauty of the flowers with a special symbolism, the exotic turtles and fish that live in these thermal waters create not only a unique habitat but also an attraction one should not miss.
- Băile 1 Mai. They are somehow in the shadow of Băile Felix, although the two resorts are neighbouring. Băile 1 Mai stood out due to the mineral waters and the sapropelic mud extracted from the lake in the locality, used in the treatment of rheumatic diseases, conditions of the central and peripheral nervous system and gynaecological ones. And with the wave pool unique in the area fun is guaranteed!
-Where to stay in Oradea
From guesthouses to luxury hotels in Oradea and its surroundings, you can find accommodation for all budgets. Prices are in line with the demand, i.e. not very high, compared to other urban destinations in the west of the country. But if you choose accommodation at a holiday home or choose the option of booking a bungalow, you also have safety, comfort and privacy! We recommend you to choose something special, accommodation at a KUB holiday home. You will realize that it is worth visiting Oradea and you will return at the earliest opportunity.
