Did you know?
Let's give credit where credit is due and let's stop first in Bacău. The town was documented in 1408, during the time of Alexander the Good, but it is obvious that its history is lost far back in time.
In 1467, Bacău was temporarily occupied by the Hungarian troops led by Matei Corvin.
Located at the crossroads of trade routes between Moldova, Transylvania and Wallachia, Bacau was also an important customs hub.
At the end of the 14th century the Bacău fair prospered due to its military attributions.
In the 14th century Alexander, son of Stephen the Great, founded here the Royal Court and the Precista Church. The ensemble of the Royal Court is the historical landmark no. 1 for Bacău.
Erected in the second half of the 15th century the ensemble consists of the remains of the old Royal Court, the Housing Tower and the "Precista" Church.
By visiting the Precista Church (1490), you will recognize the unmistakable style of the churches built in the style consecrated by Stephen the Great.
In Bacău, the poets Vasile Alecsandri and George Bacovia saw the light of day. The steps of some emblematic personalities of culture such as George Enescu, Vasile Pârvan, Grigore Tăbăcaru, Nicu Enea and George Apostu were “lost” on the streets of the town.
Not to be missed in Bacău
Bacău is not a gloomy and dark town as you would be tempted to imagine after reading Bacovia's poems, some in manuscript right at his Memorial House. Bacău remains young and quite restless and not only because of its University. Are you interested in nature and science? Don't miss the Vivarium, which will amaze you with its impressive collection of fish, birds and exotic reptiles. Are you looking for the comfort of a 3 * boutique hotel? In one click you make a reservation at one of the KUB holiday homes in Lilieci.
The road doesn’t tell the traveller what lies ahead. You have a longer list of tourist attractions near Bacau.
The Tg. Ocna salt mine
It is ideal for the treatment of respiratory ailments, relaxation and movement. The fascinating landscape of the white salt depths is enhanced by an underground lake and a waterfall. An underground church, a salt museum and an outdoor pool with thermal water make Târgu Ocna a tourist landmark. Less than 20 km away another attraction draws your attention…
Slănic Moldova
It is famous for its mineral springs and clean air, both with healing properties. Guarded by the Nemira Mountains, the resort on the banks of the Slănic brook enlivens you with its clean air, fills you with peace and amazes you with its interesting history. The so-called "Pearl of Moldavia" began its adventure in health tourism in 1840. The mineral waters here have won many international awards over time; several hotels and even a Casino have appeared in the area and a special railway line was built especially for it.
The Nemira Reservation
Slănic Moldova is also worth a trip. On the mountain paths of the Nemira Reservation you may find those wooden houses, like in fairy tales, with large windows that allow nature be even closer. It looks great, it's worth making a reservation in these holiday homes that, although extremely picturesque, provide all the comfort and security of the digital age.
Hiking
Two walking routes are recommended in the Nemira Nature Reserve, both departing from Slănic Moldova. After approx. five km, you reach Farcul Mare (Nemira's Peak, 1,700 m) and Farcul Mic (300 m). Şandru Peak is reserved for the most experienced, it reigns at 1,639 m. If you want a stay full of special experiences, book now one of the KUB holiday homes. You will be back for sure!
Slănicului Gorges and Waterfall
They have a length of approx. 400 m, enough to impress you with the wild landscapes. Both attractions are part of the "300 stairs" route, which starts from Slănic Moldova. The route allows you to walk, just above the waterfall, regardless of physical condition.
Măgura Ocnei Monastery
Built on a rocky spur that dominates Tg. Ocna and a beautiful mountain landscape, Măgura Ocnei Monastery was documented in 1653.
Valea Uzului Lake
A natural dam, located four km from Sălătruc, at an altitude of 532 m. It was formed in 1883 by a landslide that blocked the rivers Izvorul Negru and Uz. Here you can take long relaxing walks or unwind fishing stories. Meanwhile, the water collected in the lake feeds the downstream cities.
Buciaş Waterfall
It is located above the Caşin Monastery, 25 km from Oneşti. It has a beautiful and stormy waterfall, a whispering veil 15 meters high. You have to hike to the waterfall, but it’s worth getting there at least because few have managed to so far.
Roşu-Hemeiuş Castle
The elegance of the building erected at the end of the 19th century by a family of landowners strikes you with its eclectic architecture and the shades of red of the bricks. The beautiful roses that dot the place enhance the beauty of the castle and instill optimism in better times. You too can have your own residence in Lilieci, if you make a reservation at the KUB wooden houses in the locality. It is located at approx. 10 km from Bacău, in the commune of Hemeiuș, Lilieci village.
Racoș and its fortresses
One might say that Racoș is closer to Transylvania than to Moldova and would not be wrong. The town is 91 km from Bacău, but it is worth visiting for its history and significance. Here was the largest Dacian settlement in Ţara Bîrsei and the second political-administrative and religious centre, after Sarmizegetusa. It has over 2,500 years of attested history that hides many mysteries. Much more recent is the property of a Hungarian count, the luxurious Racoș Castle, which is now looking for its former glory.
When visiting Bacău, you will probably wonder “why haven’t I done it yet”?
Have a safe trip!
