You have an almost inexhaustible list of tourist attractions for which you go on more or less steep mountain paths. The mountain is the master here, and the Călimani National Park is its king! For those a little more accustomed to mountain trails, the hike to the 12 Apostles is in the top of experiences one should not miss in the vicinity of Vatra Dornei! To reach the impressive 12 Apostles Reservation you can choose a series of routes, the most famous being those from Gura Haitii and the 12 Apostles Hermitage. If you fall into the category of the experienced, then the many mountain trails to the Călimani Massif, to Suhard and Rodna are waiting to be checked on your list.
More accessible routes
The mountain trails accessible from Vatra Dornei and its surroundings are of all degrees of difficulty, but those of medium difficulty predominate. More accessible landmarks are Dealul Negru, Runcul Mare and Oușorul Peak. The road to Pietrele Doamnei, a pearl of the Rarău Mountains, is also easier. These are the main attraction of the Pietrele Doamnei nature reserve which stretches along the Rarău massif. The two impressive monuments of nature can be admired up close after a leisurely walk on a mountain trail of approximately one kilometre starting from Cabana Rarău.
The casino from Vatra Dornei
Returning to Vatra Dornei, the buildings in pastel colours that flank the narrow streets are admirable. They have an old architecture that gives it a picturesque provincial air. The building of the first official casino in Romania stands out. The formerly named Bath Casino was visited by blue-blooded personalities such as Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. Designed by an Austrian architect in an eclectic style that highlights the style of the German Renaissance, the Casino was inaugurated on 1 July 1899. It also housed a theatre, a library, a restaurant, a confectionery and attracted as a magnet wealthy guests, including from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The fate of his Casino did not match the brilliance of the original luxury. The current rehabilitation works aim at rehabilitating and transforming the building into a museum.
Walking through Vatra Dornei
In the small mountain resort, all paths lead to the Central Park and to the main attractions that merrily caper along the alleys, the squirrels! Not far away, the chairlift awaits to take you three km to the top of the Black Hill. Once you reach 1,300 m altitude, you have everything at your feet. Not all is said and done with the beauty of the place: as you go down the view becomes even more impressive.
Active holidays
The area is also very popular for cycling on mountain trails. They should not be tested if you haven't tried this sport on two wheels before, but little by little, you will discover that the routes here are unique. Adventurers can test two other special experiences in the area: rafting on the Bistrita River and paragliding. Those who love holidays on four wheels will most certainly appreciate one of the most beautiful roads in Romania, Transrarăul, its winding line being closely watched over by Pietrele Doamnei.
Skiing
Furthermore Vatra Dornei is also a "pole" of white sports. Its ski and sledge slopes are attracting more and more tourists. In Vatra Dornei there are four ski slopes: Dealul Negru (3,200 m long, medium difficulty), Veverița (850 m, medium), Parc 1 (900 m, light) and Parc 2 (500 m, light). They leave the resort and have snow for a long time. Anyway, it could be said that the resort could use a winter as long as possible; surely the slopes would always be full!
Cultural attractions
Passionate about art and culture? There have many attractions dedicated to you. Old localities, such as Ciocănești, Dorna Cândrenilor, Dorna Arini or Panaci can successfully compete for the status of the most beautiful villages in the country. The locals adhere to traditions and this can be seen in the architecture and paintings that beautify their homes. Fortunately, Ţara Dornelor is keen to preserve its old traditions. Samples from the beauty of the Bucovina folk costume and pieces necessary for the daily life of the past can also be admired at the Ethnographic Museum from Vatra Dornei.
Churches in the UNESCO patrimony
Other treasures are waiting to be discovered, too: the most important monuments of medieval Moldova are concentrated in Bucovina. With a unique history, architecture and exterior paintings, the monasteries Voroneț, Humor, Moldovița, Sucevița and Putna are part of the UNESCO world heritage and tourist and spiritual landmarks that one should not miss in the area. Don't by-pass them; you will surely want to see them again. With such an abundance of attractions, sites and accommodation possibilities for holiday homes or mountain cottages, we are not surprised that many return to the "Pearl of Bucovina".
